World Environment Day, 2023

Strict Law Enforcement and Active Stakeholder Participation Needed to End Plastic Pollution

Published: 08 June 2023

Since 1974, World Environment Day has been observed annually on 5 June to encourage people to take an active role in reducing the growing pressure on the natural environment and making the world more livable. This year's theme is "Solutions to Plastic Pollution." Through this theme, emphasis has been placed on accelerating activities aimed at combating plastic pollution, ensuring active participation from all stakeholders, and promoting an environmentally friendly circular economy system based on production, consumption, reduction, reuse, repair, refurbishment, and recycling.

The use of non-biodegradable plastic in everyday life is increasing continuously, causing long-term negative impacts on soil, water, the atmosphere, wildlife, human health, and biodiversity. As a result, plastic pollution has become a major challenge to environmental protection. Accordingly, the Government of Bangladesh is observing the day under the theme "Let Us All Join the Solution to Plastic Pollution" and the slogan "Together We Pledge, Plastic Pollution Will End."
