The theme of World Environment Day 2026 is “Now For Climate.” This year places special emphasis on accelerating the transition to renewable energy to strengthen climate resilience and adaptation. In the context of escalating climate impacts and the global fossil fuel crisis, the observance of World Environment Day is particularly significant for Bangladesh. Excessive dependence on fossil fuels remains at the heart of the climate crisis, contributing to carbon emissions, environmental pollution, and rising global temperatures. A transition to renewable energy is therefore a key solution to addressing these challenges.
In Bangladesh, there remains a lack of public awareness at the local level regarding the barriers, governance gaps, irregularities, and corruption affecting renewable energy transition, environmental protection, and waste management initiatives. Despite the existence of relevant laws and policies, there has been insufficient demand from citizens across different sectors and professions to ensure their effective implementation. Renewable energy development has not received adequate policy priority, while environmental protection laws have often not been enforced effectively. Against this backdrop, TIB has put forward a number of recommendations in its concept note for relevant stakeholders.
