Concept Note
One of the main purposes of celebrating International Women’s Day (8 March) is to recognize the contributions and challenges of women in society and to evaluate women’s social, economic, cultural, and political progress. To establish women’s rights and ensure gender equality, this day is celebrated worldwide every year with special importance to identify achievements and existing obstacles.
The United Nations has set this year’s theme as ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.’ The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh is celebrating the day under the theme ‘Equal rights and equal opportunities for women; let there be investment to move forward.’
With the spirit of ‘Women’s Rights and Anti-Corruption Movement Interwoven,’ TIB, as every year, is observing International Women’s Day with great importance this year as well. Women’s equality and Bangladesh’s commitment: Article 28(2) of the Constitution of Bangladesh states “equal rights of men and women at all levels of the state and public life.” Additionally, Bangladesh is a signatory to the United Nations’ CEDAW as an initiative to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women in 1984. Accordingly, the National Women Development Policy-2011 mentions equal opportunities for women and men and the establishment of an equitable society.
To build a society free from violence against women and children by 2025, the “National Plan to Prevent Violence Against Women and Children 2013-2025” has been adopted. Besides, the gender-related targets of the Eighth Five Year Plan (2021-2025) emphasize ensuring equal opportunities for women and men in education, healthcare, political and economic decision-making processes, and workplaces to reduce gender inequality. Moreover, gender equality has been stressed in the Bangladesh Perspective Plan (2021-2041). Despite these commitments, due to insufficient investment and ineffective utilization in appropriate sectors, we lag behind in ensuring women’s rights and development in many areas.
