Dhaka, 29 December 2024: Renowned human rights activist and founder-trustee of Impact Foundation Bangladesh, Monsur Ahmed Choudhuri, has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Trustee Board of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). He replaces outgoing Chairperson Advocate Sultana Kamal. Additionally, two new members have joined TIB’s Trustee Board: Barrister Manzoor Hasan, OBE, the founding Executive Director of TIB, and Tahera Yasmin, an expert in women’s empowerment, gender equality, and good governance. Furthermore, Faruk Ahmed, a member of TIB’s Trustee Board, has assumed the role of Chairman of TIB’s Audit Committee, while the other member of the Audit Committee is former Controller General of Defence Finance, Md Motaher Hussain.
The new Chairperson of TIB, Monsur Ahmed Choudhuri, is the founder of the widely discussed floating hospital "Jiban Tari." He has worked for the rights of persons with disabilities and their overall quality of life for many years. He played a pivotal role in forming the "National Disabled Forum" and served as its Chairperson. He also served as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Commission’s Committee on Disability (2009-2012). In recognition of his work, he has received the Nirafat Anam Memorial Inclusion Award, Sylhet Ratna Award, Lifetime Achievement Award (Singer Bangladesh and Channel I), and the Senior Ashoka Fellowship Award.
The new member of TIB’s Trustee Board, Barrister Manzoor Hasan, OBE, is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Center for Peace and Justice at BRAC University. He has also served as the Deputy Executive Director at BRAC and as a member of the International Advisory Council of Transparency International. For his significant contribution to good governance, he was awarded the "Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE)" by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.
Another new member of the board, Tahera Yasmin, is an expert in women’s empowerment, gender equality, and good governance. She has held senior roles in international organizations such as Oxfam, Care, and GIZ. She served as the Operations Director for the Rule of Law at GIZ and as the Senior Advisor for the Access to Justice for Women program. She has gained recognition as a strategic planning and program implementation expert in the NGO and development sectors.
It is noteworthy that the Trustee Board is the highest policy-making forum of TIB. The other members of the board are: Professor Dr. Tasnim Arefa Siddiqui, General Secretary; Mahfuz Anam, Publisher and Editor of The Daily Star, Treasurer; and members: Writer and academic Abul Momen, Professor Dr. Fakhrul Alam, Advocate Susmita Chakma, Founding Director of Society for Environment and Human Development (SHED) Philip Gain, Human Rights and Social Worker Banshree Pal, and Former Executive Director of BRAC International, Faruk Ahmed.
